The older I get, the more I realize that life has less to do with the “things” we own, the money we make, the cars we drive and the people we usually don’t like but worry about anyway try to impress. I realize that life is less about those kinds of things, and more about the simple things. The things that matter.
Like the yellow roses my husband bought me for my birthday…
Life is less about the messes that are made, and more about the moments we remember.
Like eating cookie dough with my Baseball Playing baby boy…
Life is less about “perfection” and the “right way” to do something or capture something (photographically speaking), and more about just doing it and not worrying about whether it’s right or wrong.
Like snapping photos of the little guy. He doesn’t always need to be looking, and the picture doesn’t always have to have the perfect lighting or even (sometimes) the perfect focus…
Life is about more than the rain and the dreariness and the not-so-perfect things that happen, and more about the little accidents, the snippets of good that are brought out by all of the hard times and the frustration that life can bring our way.
Sometimes, I just feel like we—well, I spend too much time focusing on the rules, the right and wrong way of doing things, and forget to focus on what truly matters. The simple things. The minute, basic, sometimes-overlooked things.
There’s too much anticipating and looking ahead, and not enough living the “now” in our society. And I love when I am able to sit back, relax, and just be in the moment.
I got a lot of that this weekend, and I’m hoping to add more of it to my lifestyle as the days and weeks go by.
Linking up with Mama Kat’s Writers Workshop today.

This is a beautiful post! And I had to laugh because I agree, life isn’t about getting that perfect picture of our children. I love it when I ask them to smile and they look at each other, not at the camera. But I laughed too, because your pictures are so beautiful, so perfect! You are a very talented photographer 🙂 I am so glad to have found your blog from Mama Kat!
Thank you, Kim! I’m definitely learning to embrace the imperfections of photography. It can be intimidating when there are so many “perfect” pictures and stellar photographers out there. But I enjoy looking back and remembering the moments, and not the 100 steps I took to make sure a shot was set up correctly. So happy to have you around! I look forward to getting to know you!
I love those roses! I may have to treat myself to some soon. They bring me a week or so of delight and simple pleasure! I do have an anniversary in 4 days…maybe my honey will buy me some. (:>)
Thank you, Linda! Happy (early) Anniversary! Yellow Roses are my favorite, and I’m always excited when I snag some that last longer than a few days. They are so beautiful to look at.

Beautiful photos and subject. Now I am longing for some cupcakes and yellow roses!
Thank you so much! 🙂 Every time I see this cupcake shot, I have to fight the urge to go whip up some more.
Gorgeous post and photos. Those cupcakes look delicious.
Oh yes. Those were the best cupcakes. EVER.

Beautiful photos! I am so glad you had a great birthday weekend! Family… 🙂 it matters so much more than “stuff”…
Girl, you are so right! Thanks again for the birthday wishes! Hope you guys are having a great week! Still waiting on that fabulous news from you. 😉
So true! I think having a kid has made me realize this more and more. And your “imperfect” photos are beautiful.
Thank you, Misty! I agree. Becoming a mom sure does put life and the importance of slowing down to enjoy it, into a brand new perspective.
