  1. […] called Move to Manual. Courtney wrote an introduction to the series and the first post about composition. This week I’m going to be discussing one of the most important topics in […]

  2. Anna says:

Thanks for this lesson. I got my Rebel 2Ti the summer after we found out my daughter was pregnant. I had to have a great camera to take those great shots. Little did I know I was going to become obsessed with my camera and that I had so much to learn to take those GREAT shots. Well, I’m still learning and will follow any tutorial I can. I too center my pictures but trying really hard not to. Thanks again.

  3. Thank you thank you thank you for running this series. I’ve been looking for something like this – deep enough to be valuable, yet still approachable for a novice like me. One thing that’s particularly inspiring is seeing how you’ve grown as a photographer. Thanks for sharing your early pictures so that we can all have hope of some improvement!! I can’t wait to dive in and share what I’ve been learning.

  4. Nicole says:

I LOVE this Courtney. I just added myself to the flickr group and added a photo. I’m really looking forward to this series!

  5. Kimberly says:

Great points! I’m going to start exploring more with different angles.

  6. Carolyn says:

Great points. I just learned about the rule of thirds.
I take posed photos of my kids, but I also take them as they are (good/bad/smiling/crying) because that is who they are/were in that moment.
Okay, going to get my camera and hope to have something to upload soon!

  7. Bluehost says:

You have been a great inspiration to me Courtney, many thanks.

  8. Nadia R says:

First, thank you for starting this tutorial! I too have invested money into my first DSRL a few years ago, Canon Rebel XSi. I can’t believe that it takes such wonderful pictures as those posted in your previous post! Wow!
I’m totally looking forward to all of the wisdow you ladies share with us 🙂

As for today’s topic, I am aware of the rule of thirds and have been trying to take “off-centre” photos for a while now. They look nicer anyways. But I have been guilty at times of ruining the moment and making my baby look at the camera… You live you learn, eh?

  9. Amy Willa says:

Like Veronica, I started to learn about not shooting with the subject dead center and capturing details and moments on my own. . . but the reminder is a good one! Heading over to follow Abbey and Joe around while they play! . . . here comes the Mamarazzi! (minus the flashes) <3

  10. Veronica says:

I look back through some pictures and with my first child I see how EVERY ONE OF THEM I tried for dead center, and they are so boring compared to my more recent photos! I didn’t even know it was called rule of thirds, I just kind of started noticing how nice my photos looked when I started filling more of those empty spaces.

I love detail too, tiny toes & plump little lips are the memories I love to capture.

Looking forward to more in this series.
