When I met my husband in August 2008, I was getting ready to apply for scholarships and grants to go to Nursing School. I was working in a hospital, and for the most part, I enjoyed what I did. Sure, I cleaned a lot of poo (but then again, I clean a lot of poo now as a mom…so there’s no real difference) but the interactions with the patients and their families made me appreciate my position in the hospital. So nursing, just seemed like the route to go, career wise.
Fast-forward three years.
I never went back to school (at least, not yet). I never even finished filling out the scholarship applications. Because I got married. And we moved to Florida. And I got pregnant. And had a son. And then spent the next two and a half years staying at home with him and raising him.
A lot of people would call that failure…or giving up on my dreams…or (my least favorite term) “settling” for something less than what I wanted.
But, the truth of the matter is, I owe my future, and my career, to my son.
Had I not stayed home, and not passed up Nursing School, I would have never started blogging. And if I hadn’t started blogging, I probably would have never found my voice and my passion for writing again (and I am about 99.9% certain that without blogging, I wouldn’t have made it through that first year).
Without blogging, I wouldn’t have discovered my passion and love for Graphic Design, again. I wouldn’t have realized that I could make a Career out of making other people’s blog and businesses beautiful. If that hadn’t have happened, I wouldn’t be getting ready to launch my own business.
Without blogging, I wouldn’t have met all of YOU and formed the amazing and real friendships that I have. Because with blogging came Twitter…and with Twitter came the opportunity to reach out and meet hundreds of women who understand what I’m going through and offer encouragement and friendship when I need it most.
If it weren’t for my son, I probably wouldn’t have found my passion and love for photography. I wouldn’t be planning to launch my own Photography Business next year. I wouldn’t have met the dozens upon dozens of other awesome photographers and friends that I have.
Without my son, my life would be incomplete in a lot of ways. I’d be empty without him. But not only that, I’d probably be stuck in a job that I didn’t really like, just making a living and getting by. But what I do now (Or, what I’m preparing to do)? It’s so, so much better.
I get to stay at home and watch my son grow up. I get to do something, several things, that I absolutely love. I feel like I have a purpose, and a plan.
So, my dear sweet little boy, thank you for who you are, and for helping mommy realize what it is she loves and was always meant to do. I owe you, kiddo (But don’t think you’ll be cashing in on that anytime soon…maybe when you’re 60 or something).
Linking up to Mama Kat’s Writers Workshop…prompt number three: Describe what you think your life would be like if you never had kids.
