This year we went out on a limb and gave our families a really custom and really sentimental gift. We sent gift cards, too just so they’d have something a little more “physical” to use for the holidays, but I think the highlight of their Christmas was this video we had made by our family friend and uber-talented neighbor Amy from Simply B Photos.
One of the hardest aspects of being a military family is being away from family during the holidays. We love having our own lives and being able to travel and experience life outside of our hometowns; but being separated on Christmas is always hard. One of the messages we tried to portray in this video was that despite the miles that separate us, we are okay. And we happy and thriving here in Kodiak where we’ve been placed.
And more importantly, the emphasize the fact that no matter where the military may take us in the years to come, Alabama will always be home.
Courtney, that was so sweet! I sympathize with the uprooting 🙂 I’m from Texas, and I met Hubs at home. . . and then the Coast Guard moved him to VA and subsequently us to ME. Long way from home! But we bloom where we’re planted, don’t we, Courtney!? You and your family are just beautiful, and I love the video you and Amy did! So cool. (Alaska is beautiful, huh? Hubs wants to request AK next transfer as he grew up there. . . but how is it with a preschooler?)
We really love it here (for the most part). Adjusting to minimal shopping and dining options has been a challenge, but it’s safe and a great place to raise kids. Especially here in Kodiak. It’s an island, but everyone is close knit and the base is very well taken care of. If you guys are outdoorsy at all, you would love it!

Oh my gosh that was the sweetest video ever!
Thank you, Amber! Our families LOVED it!
