Being 17 and fresh out of high school, the entire world seems like your canvas.
Big dreams.
Big ambitions.
The desire to go places, see things, and do more than anyone else ever imagined you could.
At least, that’s the mentality I was in when I graduated from high school.
You get stopped by people on the street (keep in mind I grew up in a tiny town where everyone knew everyone) and asked what do you want to be when you grow up? As if a high school senior really knows the answer to that. Where are you going to college?
I was enrolled in college. I had signed up for Orientation, picked out classes, and knew which sorority I wanted to pledge.
But in reality, I didn’t care about any of those things.
I longed for a whirlwind romance in a foreign country.
I wanted to spend my days browsing shops and sitting outside of café’s chatting with my friends. I wanted to study foreign languages, read classic literature in the park, and find my Prince Charming to sweep me away.
I dreamed of packing a suitcase and spending a year or two studying abroad in England..soaking in as much culture, foreign language, and literature as I could get my hands on. Spend another year or two studying photography, design, and maybe even fashion in New York City.
But life had something else in store for me.
This guy swept me off my feet:
He gave me a life different than what I’d imagined, but far better than anything I’d ever dreamed of. He loved me (and still does, surprisingly) in spite of all of my flaws…all of my baggage…all of my imperfections. And he gave me him:
The tiny little person who makes me life complete.
Things in life don’t always turn out the way that we plan.
But if you take a second to step back and look at the BIG picture, what’s been handed to you, is often a million times greater than what you thought you wanted.
